Freeping The Weather Channel

Dr. Heidi Cullen gets a swift boating hit job, complete with a fanatical freeping of the One Degree blog, by an apparently well-orchestrated onslaught from the minions of Inhofe's 'Pet Weisel', Marc Morano", Fox News, and it would not be complete without the rigorous scientific review of the Limbaugh Cover Story & it's Ditto Heads.

For the record, what The Weather Channel's Dr. Heidi Cullen, Ph.D. in Oceanography/Climate from Lamont-Doherty , has actually written is not what has been repeatedly claimed she has said by many in the Right Wing press, blogosphere, and .gov websites with Inhofe's fingerprints all over them.

Here's a look at the meat of what she actually wrote in a One Degree Blog post from December 21, 2006
(with key sentences italicized or highlighted in bold for emphasis):

"In an interesting follow-up blog on the reason for this all too common global warming contrarianism within the broadcast meteorology community, journalist Andrew Freedman suggests local TV meteorologist may want to look to the American Meteorological Society for guidance. Freedman goes on to point out that the AMS has in fact, issued a statement on climate change that reads:

"There is convincing evidence that since the industrial revolution, human activities, resulting in increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases and other trace constituents in the atmosphere, have become a major agent of climate change."

I'd like to take that suggestion a step further. If a meteorologist has an AMS Seal of Approval, which is used to confer legitimacy to TV meteorologists, then meteorologists have a responsibility to truly educate themselves on the science of global warming. (One good resource if you don't have a lot of time is the Pew Center's Climate Change 101.)

Meteorologists are among the few people trained in the sciences who are permitted regular access to our living rooms. And in that sense, they owe it to their audience to distinguish between solid, peer-reviewed science and junk political controversy. If a meteorologist can't speak to the fundamental science of climate change, then maybe the AMS shouldn't give them a Seal of Approval. Clearly, the AMS doesn't agree that global warming can be blamed on cyclical weather patterns."

The key in all of this is not that there is a claim to revoke the Seals currently anointed On-Camera meteorologists - even considering that many are indeed truly ignorant, or indifferent, or even big-oil-biased when it comes to the subject of climate change and global warming - but, at least to begin requiring that these TV Mets who get to boast their AMS Seals of Approval to audiences who in some cases often even just fawn over them, to at least bother to learn the essential basics of climate science before they go on TV, because as it is now many are easily confusing actual climate science with their own uninformed and unscientific, non-peer reviewed opinions on their audience.

Unfortunately, the spin job being conducted has repeatedly accused Dr. Cullen of, and I quote:
"While Cullen claims her comments calling on the American Meteorological Society to strip away their "Seal of Approval" from broadcast meteorologists (TV weathermen) who disagree with her brand of global warming alarmism... " (A version I have now found on the U.S. Senate's Blog site.. apparently they have gotten around to removing it from the actual front page Government site, and just placed it under the "Blogs" as of this morning, best I can tell) Now on the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works blog site

Generally, what is being thrown about time and time again, in several forms but all generally with the same meaning, is "that all of these local and cable weather forecasters who have been certified by the AMS, the American Meteorological Society, should be decertified if they refuse to accept the proven science of manmade global warming." (That example from Rush Limbaugh).
